The ATO offers a handy tool to help you determine whether you need to lodge a tax return.

Of course, tax rules are complicated, and it can be hard to figure out where you stand if your situation isn’t straightforward. So, if you’re still not sure about your tax obligations, feel free to reach out to FTG Accountants via our contact form. One of our qualified accountants will be happy to help.

The ATO expects all tax returns to be filed by October 31st each year. However, as long as you’ve made an appointment with a FTG Accountants accountant before October 31st, you’ll have until sometime in May (the exact date differs year to year) to complete your tax return.

If you’ve already missed this date, the ATO may apply a penalty for failing to lodge your taxes on time. The good news is that the ATO generally does not apply this penalty if you meet the following criteria:

  • You lodged your overdue tax return voluntarily (i.e. no warning letter has been issued)
  • There was no tax payable for your overdue tax return

The less exciting news is that if you meet any of the below criteria, the ATO is more likely to apply the late lodgement penalty:

  • You have two or more overdue tax returns
  • You have a poor track record of lodging your taxes on time
  • You have been prompted to lodge your tax return and have failed to comply

While it’s tempting to keep putting your taxes off, it’s crucial to understand that the Failure to Lodge (FTL) penalty continues to accrue every 28 days. The ATO may also apply a General Interest Charge (GIC) to any taxes owed after the due date. If a Default Assessment Warning Letter (DAWL) is issued, failure to comply can lead to additional administrative penalties.

In short, no matter how far behind you are, the best time to act is now. Contact OnlineTax today, and one of our registered accountants will help you take the necessary steps to get this burden off your shoulders.

The ATO requires all tax returns to be filed by October 31st each year. However, if you schedule an appointment with FTG Accountants before this deadline, you may be eligible for an extension until sometime in May (exact dates vary each year) to complete your tax return.

If you’ve missed this deadline, the ATO may impose a penalty for failing to lodge on time. The good news is that penalties are often waived if you meet the following criteria:

  • You voluntarily lodged your overdue tax return (before receiving a warning letter).
  • There was no tax payable for your overdue tax return.

However, if any of the following apply, the ATO is more likely to enforce late lodgement penalties:

  • You have two or more overdue tax returns.
  • You have a history of lodging tax returns late.
  • You were prompted by the ATO to lodge your return but failed to do so.

It's important to act quickly, as the Failure to Lodge (FTL) penalty increases every 28 days and can be accompanied by a General Interest Charge (GIC) on taxes owed after the due date. Additionally, if you receive a Default Assessment Warning Letter (DAWL) and fail to act, further administrative penalties may apply.

No matter how overdue your taxes are, the best time to take action is now. Contact FTG Accountants today, and our team of registered accountants will help you get back on track and ease the burden of overdue taxes.
